Ovations of the audience, great atmosphere, smiling musicians and a mixture of world rhythms! Last evening’s concert in Croatian Institute of Music was the closing night of 6th International Percussion Ensemble Week! After three Festival’s days in Bjelovar, Croatian “percussion city”, the artists performed in Zagreb the most attractive pieces from this year’s IPEW. Grupu from Brazil, MOL Percussion Orchestra from Belgium, PerKu-Va from Spain and the host of the Festival, biNg bang ensemble of the Zagreb Academy of Music with soloists Arthur Lipner (USA), Vid Jamnik (SLO) and conductor Igor Lešnik (also artistic director of the Festival), gave the audience a real percussion spectacle. Last night in the Hall of the Institute you couldn’t tell whether the audience or the artists were having more fun.
See You next year at the 7th IPEW!

RHYTHMS OF THE WORLD IN BJELOVAR AND ZAGREB!
On Thursday, January 8th, starts IPEW 2009!
For the sixth year in a row, the Week turns this small winter town into the capital of percussionist art and makes it into one of the most appealing musical destinations.
The reason for this are primarily all the distinguished artists from around the world willing to take part in this percussionist adventure. Original, interactive, didactic, authentic, of national colours, jazz or strictly classic, musicians that are carefully selected every year by the artistic director Igor Lešnik, always get the crowded venue of the Cultural House (Dom kulture) on its feet!
The most important event of the Week is its festive opening concert, whose hosts will be the Percussionist Ensemble of the Music Academy in Zagreb, biNg bang, with its artistic director Igor Lešnik, celebrating its tenth year of participation (Dom kulture, January 8th 2009, 7:30 pm). They will introduce their interesting collaboration with the children's choir of the Music School V. Lisinski from Bjelovar and their distinguished guests: the famous jazz vibraphonist and marimba player Arthur Lipner (USA) and the young Slovenian hope Vid Jamnik.
This year, as you can see for yourself if you decide to stop by, Bjelovar will ease the harsh winter with the rhythms of samba, salsa, buleria, the sounds of exotic original percussions, witty musical versions of Latino music. Some of our guests come from the far Brazil, like the university percussion ensemble from Sao Paolo under the leadership of Fernando Hashimoto (Dom kulture, January 8th 2009, 7:30 pm). They will perform an array of works by young Brazilian composers who form their compositions by flirting with their traditional and popular music. The Latino atmosphere will be steamed further more with the versions of works by Manuel de Falla and traditional and popular southern musical fragments by the professional Spanish ensemble PerKu-Va (Dom kulture, January 9th 2009, 7:30 pm).
MOL Percussion Orchestra, another distinguished professional ensemble, coming from Belgium (Dom kulture, January 10th 2009, 7:30 pm), will only seemingly calm the atmosphere down. Simply by taking a look at their programme, we can confirm that Bjelovar is in for another temperamental evening.
On Sunday January 11th, starting at 8:00 pm at the Croatian Musical Institute (Hrvatski glazbeni zavod), Zagreb audience will get the opportunity to witness the high point of the International Percussion Ensemble Week and hear the shorter version of all the Bjelovar concert events.
IPEW is a festival whose programme does not end in Zagreb, but travel to Slovenia (BUMfest - Žalec) and Austria (Night of Percussion - Graz). Also, it is a project that strives to expansion and collaborations with both the usual and new partners.
